Program Information

In Canada, there are two types of competitive swimming: Summer Swimming and Year-Round Swimming.

Summer swimming can run from June 1 to August 31 of any year. During that period, you can practice with a coach as often as you wish. After September 1 until May 31, you are only permitted to practice under the direction of a coach or a parent-directed program for a maximum of 2 hours per week for all ages.  This does not include water polo, synchro, swim camps, Red Cross and Lifesaving swim programs.

You are permitted to swim without the direction of a coach as often as you wish.

The SMB Breakers practice for 2 hours each week in the off-season.

The St Margaret’s Bay Breakers is a non-profit, parent-run, competitive summer swim team that has been operating for 37 years! In the winter, we are restricted to a maximum of 2 hours of coached swimming per week, but now that we have entered our summer swimming season, your swimmer can opt to swim in as many swim sessions as their level permits.

We will be hosting and participating in meets all over central Nova Scotia. Meets are completely optional; you can sign up for as many or as few as your family is comfortable with.  We encourage everyone to go at their own pace for a personal, successful season.
